A loud thud in the middle of the night gave one North Carolina homeowner the fright of a lifetime when she opened her door to find an 8-foot alligator lounging right on her welcome mat.
Real estate agent Rasa Love was startled awake around 1:00 a.m. at her home in Leland’s Waterford community when a sudden bang shook the front door, sending her dog barking. When Love flipped on the porch light and opened the door, she looked down to see the massive reptile resting its head directly on her doormat. She immediately slammed the door and called local authorities.
Officers with the Leland Police Department and wildlife specialists from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission arrived on the scene. After curious neighbors shone flashlights toward the porch, the gator slid through the front bushes and into the side yard before wildlife officers successfully captured and relocated it to a nearby waterway.
Wildlife officials noted that alligators are far more mobile than most people realize, frequently moving through neighborhoods under the cover of darkness as they travel between retention ponds and canals. Love urged her neighbors to appreciate local wildlife rather than fear it.
