Food delivery company Just Eat is issuing an apology after an experimental rollout of AI-generated menu photos resulted in surreal, unappetizing culinary disasters.
The company was testing generative AI to supply placeholder images for partner restaurants that lacked their own food photography. Unfortunately, the algorithm took dish names far too literally:
“Jacket Potato” turned into a wearable fabric jacket with whole baked potatoes.
“Tiger Prawns” became a soup bowl filled with literal tiger cubs.
“Bacon and Egg Soda Bread” transformed into a glass of soda containing floating fried eggs and strips of bacon.
After screenshots of the bizarre food mashups went viral, Just Eat confirmed it has apologized, taken down the faulty images, and hit the pause button on the entire initiative.
