Today is officially World Emoji Day, and the holiday landing on July 17 is no accident! It is the exact, random date displayed on the standard calendar emoji itself.
To mark the occasion, tech reports have unveiled nine brand-new emojis slated to join our keyboards. The upcoming additions cater to a mix of everyday passive-aggression, pop-culture hobbies, and literal tools:
-
A Cracked Smiling Face: For when “I’m fine!” actually means you are held together by a single thread.
-
A Net with a Handle: Perfect for catching a vibe, collecting data, or channeling your inner Pokémon trainer.
-
A Monarch Butterfly: A literal insect to pair nicely with your new digital net.
-
A Meteor: Like the existing comet emoji, but packed with way more fire.
-
A Pickle: An essential icon for when you are “in a pickle,” though it is also expected to become the unofficial mascot for pickleball players.
-
A Lighthouse: A classic beacon of guiding light (though probably not the one you’ll be using daily).
-
An Eraser: A standard pink block eraser, ideally suited for wanting to wipe out a text you sent at 2:00 A.M.
-
& 9. Leftwards and Rightwards Thumb Signs: A set of pointing fingers designed to silently shout, “Look at this person right here.”
Tech outlets note that the submission window for public requests is wide open. If you have an unaddressed concept that needs to be added to the official Unicode library, Lifehacker has published a complete breakdown of how to submit an emoji request. The committee will be accepting public ideas through July 31, so you’ll need to move quickly. For the nine newly announced icons, expect to see them rolling out onto phones starting in early 2027.
