Top dogs were riding the waves as hundreds of spectators cheered from a Northern California beach during the 10th annual World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica.
Located about 14 miles south of San Francisco, the milestone event brought out canines of all shapes and sizes, from tiny spaniels to large labradors, all sporting colorful life vests. Judges evaluated the furry athletes on key factors, including their balance and time spent on the board, the size of the wave, and overall confidence on the water. Human partners stood by in the water to help launch the surfboards onto the best incoming swells, triggering enthusiastic applause from the crowd with every successful run to the shore.
Beyond the main competition, the event featured tandem heats where multiple dogs, or dogs and their human owners, shared a single board. The gathering also doubled as a community celebration, hosting local pet adoption drives and raising funds for animal welfare charities.
Among the standout competitors was Rusty, a Miniature Pinscher from Huntington Beach wearing a shark-fin life jacket and protective goggles. His owner, Sophia Sadlowski, originally placed him on a board as a puppy just to take fun photos, but Rusty quickly fell in love with the sport and placed third in his very first competition at just four months old. Now both cancer survivors, Sadlowski and Rusty continue to ride the waves together as a seasoned surfing duo.
