After a major snowstorm in Providence, Rhode Island, a man clearing about 20 inches of snow made a shocking discovery!
Buried beneath the snow was a tegu, a large South American lizard not native to New England. The man wrapped the cold reptile in a shirt and brought it inside to keep it warm.
Wildlife rescuers and veterinarians took over care soon after. Vets found the tegu weak, underweight, and suffering frostbite, including damage to its tongue. Part of the tongue had to be amputated, and the animal is now recovering with steroid treatment.
Officials are unsure whether the tegu escaped from an owner or was abandoned.
The wildlife center is asking anyone with information to come forward.
