MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After weather delays, a historic submarine will be able to safely make its trip from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay for maintenance.
The USS Cobia was scheduled to be towed 55 nautical miles north to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay on Thursday for it to be cleaned, inspected, replated and repainted.
However strong wind gusts made it unsafe for the USS Cobia and the crew onboard to travel.
The new date for its journey has been set for Sunday at 8 a.m., weather permitting.
The public can watch it leave from the shoreline surrounding the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
Starting at 7 a.m., crews will get the submarine ready for departure with two tugboats attached.
Around 8 p.m., the USS Cobia is scheduled to leave the dock and head north up Lake Michigan to Sturgeon Bay.
The USS Cobia is expected to arrive in Sturgeon Bay around 6 p.m.
