(WTAQ-WLUK) — Flags across Wisconsin will fly at half-staff on Saturday in honor of a Shawano airman who was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
U.S. Army Air Forces Pvt. Herbert E. McLaughlin will be buried in his hometown on Saturday. While he died in the Dec. 7, 1941 attack in Hawaii, his remains were identified only last year, with the help of DNA analysis.
Gov. Tony Evers issued the statewide flag-lowering order.
“Private McLaughlin gave his life defending the values and freedoms we hold most dear, and on behalf of the state, we are forever grateful for his service, selflessness, and sacrifice,” he said in a news release. “It is our responsibility to make sure every hero receives the recognition they deserve, and it is an honor to be able to help welcome Private McLaughlin back to his home to be laid to rest.”
McLaughlin’s funeral on Saturday will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery — the same place his mother was laid to rest.
The funeral will be similar to an Arlington ceremony, which includes a riderless horse, the honor squad, the playing of taps and the presentation of a flag to the family.
