BROWN COUNTY (WTAQ-WLUK) — Construction will soon begin on Highway 172 in Brown County.
Just over eight miles of 172 — from the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport entrance to Interstate-43 — will be under construction beginning March 27.
The $24.3 million project involves resurfacing and numerous structure and ramp improvements. The hope is to provide a smoother and safer ride for drivers, extend the life of the pavement structure and ensure adequate draining to reduce potential flooding.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation listed the following projects:
- WIS 172 mill and overlay of roadway and ramp surfaces between I-41 and I-43
- WIS 172 joint repair and overlay between the airport and I-41
- Reconstruction of the westbound WIS 172 off-ramp to southbound I-41
- Resurfacing of Riverside Drive between the Green Bay Correctional Institution entrance and Lazarre Avenue
- Resurfacing of Webster Avenue between the ramp terminals
- Concrete repair and asphalt overlay of County GV between ramp terminals
- Curb ramp upgrades, curb repairs and concrete base patching
- Culvert repair and rehabilitation of 30 structures
- Resurfacing of the Hoffman Road Park and Ride
- Replacement of two sign structures, beam guard upgrades, and pavement markings
The highway will largely remain open during construction. Work is planned for hours that will impact the public the least.

The highway will remain open, but drivers can expect lane closures and flagging operations. Highway ramps may be closed while crews work as well.
Project Development Supervisor, Andy Fulcer, discussed one of the more significant closures.
“We do have work where we are reconstructing the loop ramp that goes from westbound 172 to southbound I-43,” said Flucer. “That’ll be closed for approximately six weeks.” Specific dates of that closure have yet to be determined.
Construction is expected to finish in November.
