(UW ATHLETICS) MINNEAPOLIS – No. 1 Wisconsin battled past rival Minnesota, 6-0, on Saturday, behind a two-goal night from Jack Phelan and a 24-save shutout from Daniel Hauser.
UW improved to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Big Ten (11 points) with the victory over the 18th-ranked Gophers (3-4-3, 1-1-2 Big Ten – 3 points).
Finn Brink appeared to score within the first two minutes, but the goal was overturned on review. The Badgers kept pushing, going after every loose puck, and it paid off when Grady Deering’s shot deflected off the pads of Minnesota goaltender Melvin Strahl and Ryan Botterill swept in for the rebound.
Wisconsin took control in the second period. Minnesota was called for a major penalty just before the halfway mark and Dylan Compton opened the power-play scoring with a one-timer off a pass from Logan Hensler.
Fifty-five seconds later, Bruno Idzan added another power-play goal on the same major.
Phelan capped the second period with his first NCAA goal, and his first as a Badger, a long-awaited moment for the junior.
Phelan followed it with a second career goal in the third period, finding a spot in front of the net to take a pass from JJ Wiebusch.
Luke Osburn finished the scoring on another power play, sniping a shot past Strahl.
Hauser stopped all 25 shots he faced for the shutout, including eight on the power play.
