NEW HOLSTEIN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — People in a Calumet County community are sharing their concerns about a mysterious loud noise.
It’s not clear where the sound is coming from, but New Holstein Police are investigating.
“Saturday morning, I received a couple of phone calls and a couple of messages on my Facebook page about an explosion that was heard in the city,” New Holstein Mayor Jeff Hebl said.
Hebl is working with the Police Department to determine the source of an explosive noise happening within the city.
The jarring noise has been going on the past couple months, reportedly at least 10 other times.
Hebl said it’s not clear where exactly it’s coming from or what it is.
“The speculation is across the board from emptying a dumpster to a ground fault to sewer system you name it, Tannerite,” Hebl said.
If the noise was for legitimate purposes, like construction, Hebl said the city would already know about it.
Hebl said it’s believed the explosions are coming from the southeast end of town. A neighbor was woken up in the middle of the night three different times from explosions.
“The first time I heard it I kind of sat up in bed and like what the heck was that? You know, I mean it just caught me off guard because it was allowed enough noise that it’s like something’s going on,” New Holstein resident Brenda Salkowski said.
Salkowski has lived in New Holstein for about two years.
She said hearing an explosion of that magnitude so close to home gives her concern.
“It sounded like it was in our yard like a gun shooting off in our yard, I mean it was that loud of a noise,” Salkowski said.
Meanwhile, Hebl said it’s an ongoing investigation as police continue to gather evidence.
He hopes nearby neighbors will come forward with more information before something catastrophic happens.
“Whatever it is, the sound of it, somebody’s gonna get hurt and that’s the main key and you know, we don’t want to see anybody get hurt,” Hebl said.
If you have any information about the noise, you’re asked to call the New Holstein Police Department at (920) 898-4241 and you can remain anonymous.
