Wisconsin stargazers are in for a celestial show as the annual Perseids meteor shower runs from July 17 through August 24!
Caused by Earth passing through the dust trail left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, the shower is expected to peak on the night of August 12 into August 13, producing up to 50 to 100 meteors per hour. Thanks to a new moon coinciding with the peak, dark skies will make the fireballs even easier to spot with the naked eye.
The best viewing time is just before dawn while facing north toward the Perseus constellation. To maximize your chances, skip telescopes or binoculars, avoid bright phone screens, and allow 15 to 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the dark.
