A woman in Australia got the surprise of a lifetime when she discovered more than 100 exotic Madagascar hissing cockroaches living inside her home, leading to the largest seizure of illegal exotic invertebrates in the nation’s history.
The giant insects had apparently escaped from a nearby illegal breeding operation and multiplied over time, transforming the property into a massive colony. Valued at $200,000 Australian dollars ($140,000 USD) on the black market. Madagascar hissing cockroaches can grow several inches long, are completely flightless, and produce a loud, distinctive hissing sound by forcing air through tiny breathing holes in their bodies. While they are relatively harmless to humans and are often kept as pets globally, finding dozens of them roaming your hallways is a nightmare scenario!
Biosecurity and pest experts were ultimately brought in to seize the contraband insects and help the homeowner reclaim her roach-free residence.
