APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The city of Appleton and Valley Transit secured a $25 million grant to redevelop its downtown transit center.
This comes two years after the grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation in June of 2024. The grant was being held up by review.
“We are incredibly grateful to our federal, state and local partners who helped make this project possible,” said City of Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford. “We would like to especially recognize Congressman Tony Wied, former Congressman Mike Gallagher, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation Loren A. Smith, Jr. and the Federal Transit Administration for their assistance and support of the project. This transformational project will improve mobility, strengthen downtown Appleton, expand Valley Transit’s offerings and create new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors. The new transit center will provide a safer, more accessible and more efficient transportation hub while also supporting additional housing and economic development in the heart of our city.”
The new facility at 100 E. Washington Street will feature expanded bus capacity; indoor and covered outdoor passenger waiting areas; public restrooms; secure bicycle storage; ticketing and supervisor offices; and improved accessibility features. The redevelopment is also expected to improve pedestrian safety, reduce bus congestion, and create a more welcoming and convenient experience for riders.
More information on the project will be shared as plans are finalized.
