(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) QUEENS, NY – For just the second time this season, Marquette came from behind to pick up a win, a 79th-minute goal from Drew Mullins gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 victory over St. John’s on Saturday evening at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium. The win improved Marquette to 10-5-1 overall and 3-4-0 in BIG EAST play and kept their postseason chances alive.
The Red Storm struck first less than three minutes into the match when Luca Fargnoli hit a low shot from outside the box in the third minute to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.
Marquette responded midway through the opening half, finding the equalizer in the 14th minute. Off a quick counter down the right flank, Mateo Stoka delivered the setup and Tomiwa Adewumi cut back to his left and buried his 10th goal of the season to bring the match level at 1-1.
The teams entered halftime tied despite St. John’s holding a 9-7 edge in shots. Goalkeeper Cameron Simpson kept the Golden Eagles even with five first-half saves, two coming on headers from the edge of his six-yard box.
The match remained deadlocked through much of the second half, but the breakthrough came in the 79th minute.
Moments after entering the match, Dominic Firs provided a spark off the bench, getting to the end line before slipping a pass across the face of goal to Drew Mullins who was sitting open on the back post in the 79th minute. Mullins’ tap-in proved to be the game-winner and gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the night.
Marquette protected the advantage over the final 11 minutes, limiting the Red Storm to just one shot on goal the rest of the way. Simpson finished with six saves as the Golden Eagles secured their 10th victory of the season.
