New York City is addressing its infamous lack of public restrooms with a high-tech solution: automated, free-to-use “robo-toilets.”
Part of a new municipal pilot program, these modular pods resemble sleek moving containers equipped with solar panels, an entry ramp, and a spacious interior complete with a toilet, urinal, and sink. Unlike traditional porta-potties, the robo-toilets don’t require connections to city water or sewer lines, making them significantly cheaper to install. To unlock a pod, users scan a QR code on their smartphone or use a special tap card distributed by local community partners.
However, there’s a catch! Each session comes with a strict 10-minute time limit. Before the time expires, an automated speaker announces, “Attention: Your use time has expired. The door is opening now,” before the door automatically slides wide open to discourage loitering. A dedicated maintenance crew manages the units, which operate daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
