Eagle Scout candidate completes new outdoor archery range in New London

The range was recently completed by Eagle Scout candidate Colton Swanson of BSA Troop 59 in New London. Swanson began work on the project in July of last year, when he submitted his proposal to the city. City leaders had hoped to add an archery range for residents but had not been able to bring the project to fruition before Swanson took it on.

For Scouts, earning the Eagle Scout rank is the highest honor in Scouting America, formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America. The most significant requirement is completing a project that benefits a community organization, school or religious institution.

Swanson spent the past year working to obtain funding and supplies, develop structure drawings and timelines, and coordinate meetings to organize the build. The project needed to be completed before he turned 18. Swanson completed the archery range Aug. 28 and turned 18 on Sept. 4.

In addition to the service project, Swanson had to earn 21 merit badges, including 13 required for Eagle Scout, with the remainder chosen by him. He also needed to demonstrate leadership within his troop, show Scout spirit by exemplifying the ideals of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, participate in a Scoutmaster conference, and complete a board of review before officially earning the Eagle Scout rank. About 6% of Scouts earn the Eagle Scout rank.
