(WTAQ-WLUK) — Voters in Wisconsin now know who will be on the ballot for the general election, in the race for Governor. Tuesday’s primary election results are a tale of two sides.
Congressman Tom Tiffany has been the presumptive Republican nominee for months. He defeated his opponent in a landslide victory.
“I think we have to preserve what this nation is about. We don’t need to change it. It’s been running well for 250 years,” said Karen Konrad.
Across the aisle, the democratic nominee will be Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
His victory came as a surprise, considering his opponent, Francesca Hong, led in many of the primary polling.
Some democratic voters say they didn’t see his victory coming.
“It was quite shocking. Going to bed, I’m like, ‘I don’t know which way it’s going to go and how many votes it’s going to come down to’, but it was a bit surprising,” said Tim Whitaker.
Republican operative Mark Graul says that surprise changes the landscape of the race in November.
“It’ll be a more traditional race in terms of you won’t have somebody who’s such an outlier like Francesca Hong. I think you have two more kind of mainstream candidates in Congressman Tiffany and County Executive Crowley,” said Graul.
Republican voters continue to echo concern about potentially having socialist policies in Wisconsin. Some of them said that they paid close attention to the democratic primary and were glad the race went to Crowley instead of Hong.
“So, myself, I was happy with the results on the democratic side, and I’m not concerned with it being an issue on the republican side,” said Konrad.
With its field divided in the primary, we asked democratic voters if they thought the party could fully back one candidate in November.
“Now we’ve picked someone, so now let’s get behind that candidate and let’s force them to give us more detailed ideas or things that we can get behind and build a stronger coalition,” said Whitaker.
Tiffany and Crowley have less than three months to convince Wisconsinites why they deserve the governor’s seat.
The general election is Nov. 3.
