Seattle has officially crowned a new cultural icon, and he’s a uniquely proportioned, trash-roaming local hero: Jimothy the raccoon!
What started as a viral obsession with the neighborhood animal living in Ballard erupted into a full-blown community phenomenon on Sunday, July 26. Hosted by Seattle City Councilmembers Alexis Mercedes Rinck and Dan Strauss, artists and fans gathered right next to the Ballard Farmers Market at Bergen Place Park for an official Jimothy Art Contest.
The event drew hundreds of enthusiastic fans and roughly 50 artists who submitted creative works showcasing the beloved trash panda. Submissions ranged from hand-painted canvases and custom-embroidered jackets to handcrafted stuffed toys. The grand prize was a featured display inside Seattle City Hall for the remainder of the summer.
