A Texas man found out the hard way that Tesla’s “Wade Mode” does not turn a vehicle into a boat! The driver was arrested after intentionally steering his Tesla Cybertruck straight into Grapevine Lake to test out the truck’s water-crossing capabilities, apparently convinced the high-tech vehicle could handle the lake.
The experiment was short-lived. The Cybertruck made it only a brief distance from the shore before striking underwater rocks, disabling the vehicle and causing it to take on water. According to police, the driver admitted he was attempting to test the vehicle’s off-road water feature, which Tesla explicitly states is only meant for briefly crossing shallow water, not navigating lakes. A massive crane had to be brought in to hoist the heavy truck out of the water, and the driver was subsequently arrested on charges including water safety violations and operating a vehicle in a restricted section of the lake.
