Two American tourists were arrested in Japan after one of them hopped a fence and dropped directly into the monkey enclosure at the Ichikawa City Zoo outside Tokyo!
The intruder, wearing a bright blue suit and an oversized, smiling emoji mask with sunglasses, clambered into the exhibit while carrying a stuffed toy. His accomplice stayed behind the barrier but was also arrested for filming the entire spectacle, which authorities believe was a performative stunt meant to promote a cryptocurrency.
While the two men now face charges of forcible obstruction of business, the zoo’s most famous resident, a baby macaque named Punch, who went viral globally earlier this year for befriending an IKEA plush orangutan after being rejected by his mother, was thankfully unharmed.
Zoo officials confirmed that none of the 60 monkeys inside were injured, but the facility is installing anti-intrusion nets, stepping up permanent security patrols, and considering a total ban on filming near the habitat to keep creators from treating the animals like props.
