APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Fox Valley blood center issued a Code Red, pleading for donors to rebuild critical reserves.
The Community Blood Center (CBC) is urging community members to make a lifesaving donation as there is a critical need for blood and platelet donations due to heavy emergency use.
CBC‘s supply of platelets and Type O and Type A blood are critically low, but all blood types are constantly needed. In just one day, two local hospitals CBC supports needed more than 100 extra units of blood products to help patients experiencing severe blood loss.
“Local hospitals are using blood products to treat patients during emergencies faster than donations are coming in,” said John Hagins, President & CEO, The Community Blood Center. “We must act now to rebuild the supply to continue meeting patient needs. By donating today, you can be someone’s lifeline tomorrow.”
Several patients continue to receive large amounts of blood products from generous CBC donors this week:
- One local patient required at least 21 emergency units of Type O blood.
- Another local patient needed at least 30 emergency units of Type A blood.
- Multiple patients are also relying on dozens of emergency units of platelets and plasma, often in combination with blood transfusions.
CBC is showing appreciation for donors in many ways, including the Lifesaver Rewards program. All donors can join by opting in to earn points throughout the donation process. Points are redeemable for a $25 value gratitude gift, including virtual gift cards.
There are many available appointments that must be filled as soon as possible. You can schedule a donation by visiting communityblood.org, using the CBC Donor App or calling (800) 280-4102.
