History was made at Churchill Downs this past Saturday, as Golden Tempo surged from the back of the pack to win the 152nd Kentucky Derby! The victory was a monumental milestone for the sport, making Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer in history to win the “Run for the Roses.”
Entering the gates as a 23-to-1 long shot, Golden Tempo spent much of the race in last place before jockey Jose Ortiz found a late second gear. In a thrilling photo finish, the colt edged out the favorite, Renegade, by just a neck. The win secured a historic “double” for Ortiz, who also won the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, while DeVaux, who launched her independent stable only eight years ago, cemented her legacy as a trailblazer for women in horse racing.
