The Artemis II launch on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, was a historic milestone for NASA, but for passengers on a few lucky Delta Air Lines flights, it was the ultimate “right place, right time” moment.
As the SLS rocket carrying four astronauts to the Moon roared off Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center at 6:35 p.m. ET, travelers on a flight from Orlando to Detroit (DL 551) and another arriving from Costa Rica captured breathtaking footage from 30,000 feet. The viral videos, including a standout clip from passenger Kate McCuistion, show the 322-foot rocket piercing through the clouds, identifiable by its massive fiery plume and a curving vapor trail as it accelerated toward 17,000 mph.
On one flight, the pilot even hopped on the intercom to tell passengers to look out the window, with some witnesses describing it as a “once-in-a-generation” experience that felt like watching the moon landing live!
