The final pennies ever produced in the United States have officially been sold at auction, and the total price tag came in at a staggering $16.76 million.
The auction was held by Stack’s Bowers Galleries on behalf of the U.S. Mint and featured 232 special three-coin sets created to mark the end of penny production after 232 years. Each set included three coins: a 2025 penny from the Philadelphia Mint, a 2025-D penny from the Denver Mint, and a 24-karat gold penny. All of the coins were stamped with a unique Omega (Ω) symbol, signifying the final chapter of the one-cent coin.
While most of the sets sold for tens of thousands of dollars, the final set, representing the very last pennies ever struck, sold for an eye-popping $800,000 on its own.
The penny was officially retired after production was halted in November 2025, largely due to rising manufacturing costs that made the coin more expensive to produce than it was worth. What was once loose change at the bottom of a purse has now become a highly sought-after piece of American history!
