GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The public will be allowed to attend a meeting where the future of Green Bay East High School football coach Niko Sila will be decided.
Sila’s wife, Chelci Sila, says he made the request for an open meeting Tuesday morning. The district confirms the meeting will be held Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m. in the board room of the district office building, 200 S. Broadway.
“As a special board meeting, there will not be a public forum,” a district spokesperson said. “The public may attend and listen to the meeting, but they will not have an opportunity to address the Board. Out of respect for Mr. Sila’s rights, nothing further can be shared at this time.”
Sila has been employed by the district since 2018. He is East’s manager of engagement, attendance and advocacy. He was placed on administrative leave Oct. 16 after he says the district outlined numerous allegations against him.
Administrators told Sila last month he could choose to resign or otherwise face termination. Sila declined the offer to resign. During a public gathering last week, representatives for Sila said he planned to continue fighting against the threat of being fired, despite being offered a “substantial severance package.”
Sila’s representatives said the allegations against him are either “hearsay” or being taken out of context. The district’s claims, per those representatives, are as follows:
- Divisive or unprofessional comments about staff and/or administration
- Intimidation of colleagues
- Intimidation or manipulation of students and lack of professional boundaries
- Use of profanity with students
- Inappropriate physical consequences during football practices
- Lack of training and supervision of monitors and providing incorrect attendance processes and procedures to monitors
- Giving rides to students in his personal vehicle
- Violation of the district’s no-contact order by communicating with students while on administrative leave
- Inappropriately updating and altering student attendance in Infinite Campus
The district is legally prohibited from publicly sharing the allegations against Sila.
State law prevents the school district from publicly sharing the allegations against Sila due to it being a personnel matter. The district has said Sila’s side has not provided a complete accounting of the allegations.
The district has recommended the school board fire Sila due to his refusal to resign. The school board would have the final say if it comes to termination.
