Turns out, the odds are still in Hollywood’s favor—because The Hunger Games just won’t quit. Fresh off The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, we’re getting another prequel: Sunrise on the Reaping.
The new film is based on Suzanne Collins’ latest book and focuses on the 50th Hunger Games (aka the second Quarter Quell) where a young Haymitch Abernathy claws his way to victory in a twisted, double-tribute deathmatch.
Here’s the rumored cast lineup:
Charlie Plummer – Haymitch Abernathy
Charlie Plummer is known for his breakout performance in Lean on Pete (2017), which earned him the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival. He also starred in Hulu’s Looking for Alaska miniseries. He’s got the look, but now all eyes are on whether he can capture Haymitch’s layered trauma and resilience.
Ralph Fiennes – Coriolanus Snow
Ralph Fiennes is a veteran actor recognized for portraying Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series and M in the James Bond franchise. His work in The English Patient, Schindler’s List, and The Grand Budapest Hotel has earned him multiple award nominations. If cast, Fiennes would most definitely be able to capture the evolving menace that is President Snow.
Kieran Culkin – Caesar Flickerman
Kieran Culkin recently won an Oscar for A Real Pain (2024) and dominated TV screens as Roman Roy in Succession, earning a Golden Globe and multiple Emmy nods. Earlier credits include Igby Goes Down (2002) and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). He’s charismatic actor with sharp wit, so there is no doubt that his portrayal of the Games’ flamboyant host would be one to watch.
Jesse Plemons – Plutarch Heavensbee
Jesse Plemons has been recognized for his roles in films such as The Power of the Dog (2021), The Irishman (2019), and Judas and the Black Messiah (2021). He has also had prominent roles in Breaking Bad, Fargo, Friday Night Lights, and many more. He would be a great follow up to Phillip Seymour Hoffman bringing the intelligent and manipulative Game Maker to life.
Elle Fanning – Effie Trinket
Elle Fanning’s recent work includes Hulu’s The Great, where she stars as Catherine the Great. She’s also known for her roles in Maleficent, 20th Century Women (2016), and The Neon Demon (2016). Reports suggest she’s already been offered the part of Effie Trinket, and though she has big shoes to fill, she may be the only one who can fill them.
The project is still in early development, and casting decisions have not yet been confirmed, but we’re ready to watch the Capitol ruin lives all over again. May the reboots be ever in your favor.
