GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An initiative in Northeast Wisconsin is hoping to re-energize literacy in young children.
Leadership Green Bay Team Four, in collaboration with Encompass, announced Thursday that eight Little Free Libraries will be installed outside Encompass childcare sites.
The libraries allow children and families to take books home with them for free.
Encompass executive director, Missy Schmeling, says they’ve seen a decrease in literacy in the last four years, with COVID playing a big part in that. She hopes by increasing access to books, children will foster a love for reading.
“To be able to have accessible books, free for kids and families is essential to supporting families in need in our community, developing those early literacy skills at an early age, especially we know that from birth to five, brain development is crucial in those first five years and this will just be a really great resource for all of our families at all of our locations,” Schmeling said.
Encompass says it serves more than 850 kids a day at its seven locations in the Green Bay area. It will be opening its eighth location in Oconto Falls in June.
