GREENVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Improved case counts and vaccinations coupled with sunshine and warmer temperatures has yard sale signs reappearing.
Finding the best bargains is what brings most people to rummage sales.
“I call it treasure hunting,” said one shopper.
“We’re always excited to find some steals,” said Darren Brzozowski while holding his daughter.
Brzozowski stopped in a Greenville neighborhood to browse around.
He tells FOX 11 many people didn’t sell last spring as the virus started to spread.
“We’re definitely excited to see them return this year.”
“Uhh, I have a shopping problem so I have to sooner or later clear it out.”
The Verhagens are holding a joint rummage sale.
They have twice the stuff to sell since they didn’t have a garage sale in 2020 — as the state requested.
“Do everything to hold your rummage sale outside, because our risk for exposure is much less when we are outside than when we are inside,” said Wisconsin Department of Health Services Deputy Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk.
Willems Van Dijk says its okay to host rummage sales this year.
“Just like we have encouraged many of our retailers to be cautious of how many people you have present at the same time. You might set an occupancy at your rummage sale depending on how much space you have, to space out items. I wouldn’t hold a rummage sale without requiring everyone to wear masks at this point in time.”
“Lots of people do come through and wear masks and we will put one on,” said Bonnie Brehmer.
Brehmer tells FOX 11 her family isn’t worried about its rummage sale being unsafe.
“No one is really on top of eachother going through the clothes. It’s definitely nice to be outside and do this.”
“It’s nice to kinda get back to reality, living like we used to, and interacting with other people.. have them come out,” said the Verhagens.
Rummagers say the season is just getting started and they are comfortable to go from yard sale to yard sale, safely.
Many community wide rummage sales were canceled last year – but some rummagers told Fox 11 that they are announcing 2021 dates soon.
