MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ – WLUK) — A local group called “Save the Veterans” was out on Veteran’s Day, cleaning the gravestones of Civil War Veterans at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc.
U.S. Army veteran, Joe Tadych from Manitowoc started the group after visiting the cemetery and not being able to see any of the names on the Grand Army of the Republic statue.
“I figure every veteran’s my brother or sister, and that’s why I do it.” said Tadych.
On Friday morning, Tadych scrubbed the stone of Captain Horace M. Walker.
“It’s a labor of love,” said volunteer Vicki Schleis. “I mean you just get so connected.”
The group plans to restore the remaining 200 Civil War gravesites next year.
