DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Construction continues at a popular recreation area in Door County.
Wooden framework for the ramp will lead to the new Eagle Tower at Peninsula State Park.
It’s not the only upgrade at the site.
The sounds of power tools and construction materials on the move are just what the group, Friends of Peninsula State Park wants to hear. Eagle Tower was deemed unsafe in 2015 and taken down a year later. Business Manager Steve Strucely says the new design will feature an 850-foot long accessible ramp, leading to a new 60-foot tower.
“To see the renderings, and to see the plans is one thing, but when you actually see the real thing, and the beauty of the wood that they’re using to make it, it’s just a really impressive structure,” said Steve Strucely, Friends of Peninsula State Park Business Manager.
The Friends group contributed $750,000 toward the $3.4 million initiative.
In addition to the Eagle Tower project, the White Cedar Nature Center is getting an upgrade. Construction wrapped up earlier this summer.
“We are just waiting, of course, because of COVID. We cannot open it, but once it does get open, I think people will really appreciate it. There’s a lot more room. There are classrooms. There’s indoor bathrooms,” said Chris Holicek, Friends of Peninsula State Park President.
Holicek says future improvements at the nature center include upgrades to parking and a new outdoor amphitheater as well. Meanwhile, construction at the tower site continues. Officials hope to have everything complete by the end of the year.
“I think it will be a neat experience for people to be able to take a leisurely walk to the top, stop along the way, and enjoy the trees, the surrounding trees, and nature,” said Strucely.
The Tower Project is one of many improvements to Peninsula State Park.
Other upgrades include new campground equipment, like picnic tables and fire rings, as well as new bathroom and shower facilities.
