(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) – The Marquette University women’s soccer team (6-3-4, 2-0-3 BIG EAST) continued BIG EAST play on Saturday evening with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against UConn (7-3-3, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
The result keeps the Golden Eagles unbeaten in conference play and solidifies their position in the top four of the BIG EAST standings through matches of Oct. 11.
The Huskies kept the pressure on early, firing three shots in the opening eight minutes. UConn jumped out to an early lead in the ninth minute when they found the back of the net.
Marquette responded with composure, growing into the match and earning a penalty in the 26th minute after drawing a foul inside the box. Head coach Chris Allen turned to sophomore forward Megan Murray, who buried the equalizer into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
The teams went into halftime level, with the Huskies holding a 10-5 advantage in shots.
Marquette came out of the break with renewed energy, and in the 59th minute, the Golden Eagles struck again. Ella McAleenan slipped a pass into the box for Emily Fix, who converted her third goal of the season to give MU its first lead of the night 2-1.
In the 74th minute, UConn took advantage of a rebound off the crossbar to tie things up at 2-2.
Molly Keiper nearly produced a late winner for the Golden Eagles, rattling the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 81st minute, but the match ultimately ended all square.
