MENOMINEE, Mich. (WTAQ-WLUK) — In a vote that wasn’t even close, Menominee residents decided Tuesday to limit the number of cannabis dispensaries in the city.
Since Michigan legalized recreational marijuana in 2018, more and more pot shops have been opening in Menominee. Initially, there was a limit on the number of dispensary licenses, but after a legal battle, the city’s cap was removed.
Now, the city will allow only nine licenses at one time. This comes after residents went to the polls Tuesday to decide whether Menominee should pass this proposed ordinance amendment:
Shall the City of Menominee adopt an amendment to its ordinance that allows for no more than 9 marijuana retailers in the city?
The amendment passed by a landslide, based on election results from the Menominee County clerk. 1,416 people voted “yes” and 242 voted “no.”
Menominee has already issued licenses to nine dispensaries, according to Mayor Casey Hoffman. He says at least four other businesses are currently trying to open shops, which could potentially bring the number to 13.
At this point, city zoning allows for up to 15 dispensaries.
Hoffman said the plan is to issue licenses to businesses already in the process of coming to the city. The city will then use attrition to eventually get down to nine.
