APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The Fox Valley Technical College’s National Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC) offers a variety of resources and training opportunities for anyone to check out online.
Their new police relations training series saw more than 2,000 people sign up in the first five hours.
“We currently have over 2,700 people enrolled for each of the programs, which is a record even for us. We’ve got a pretty strong national reach and it’s great to see that level of interest in this training series,” says Program Administrator Aaron Tomlinson, “It discusses the fragile relationship between law enforcement and communities of color, and the second focuses on implicit and explicit bias.”
The pandemic has forced the center to shift from typical face-to-face training models to a virtual platform, but they developed a series of webinars that are being made available to the public. People from across the country – and even a few from Canada – have signed up to learn more about how policing works.
NCJTC is launching a similar series, also related to police and community relations, that is set to begin in September.
“We have a three-part series called Re-Imagining Policing, which looks at the history of police and community relations, what the current state of these relations are, and then how we can move forward collectively in a positive and proactive way,” Tomlinson tells WTAQ News, “A number of other training programs that we do are related to verbal de-escalation, improving your interactions with law enforcement and social services, and a host of other programs…an Amber Alert training program, Internet Crimes Against Children and protecting children. We do a lot of work with our tribal partners nationally. So we actually are doing training throughout the United States every single day almost year round.”
There are still spots available for the police relations sessions and others. Anyone interested can sign up through the NCJTC website.
