GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – After six delays, it appears Jacob Cayer’s trial for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend and her mother in 2016 will proceed as planned next week.
Cayer allegedly killed Sabrina Teague and Heesun ‘Sunny’ Teague at a Hobart home on June 7, 2016. Joel Kennedy was also stabbed in the incident. Cayer has pleaded not guilty, and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
The trial has been delayed five times due to Cayer’s competency issues, and once because in-person court hearings were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Jury selection is scheduled for Friday at the KI Convention Center – which the county is renting to allow more space for social distancing during the selection process. Opening statements are scheduled for next Monday. The trial is scheduled to last one week.
The judge Monday rejected a defense request to allow it to introduce evidence that Kennedy is actually the person responsible for the murders.
Also Monday, the prosecutors and defense attorneys told the judge they will supply the court with a list of potential jurors who could be excused in advance of Friday’s hearing based on the questionnaires they filled out.
A total of 14 jurors – 12 jurors and two alternates – will be seated.
