GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — For the first time ever, Green Bay residents are able to cast their votes early at locations beyond City Hall.
Wednesday marked the start of in-person absentee voting at the Green Bay’s two new early satellite voting sites — St. Bernard Parish and Johnsonville Tailgate Village.
City Clerk Celestine Jeffreys pitched the idea, citing increased flexibility, higher voter turnout and improved efficiency. The City Council approved the new locations in June.
“I think it’s really important to try to bring voting closer to people and in the hours that they may be available. Not everyone is available on a Tuesday, although our voting hours on Election Day are very generous,” Jeffreys said.
Some people just have busy lives and they work shifts, so this is our first foray into having some evening voting closer to Election Day. That’s when we see more people come for voting in-person in City Hall.
One of the only differences between these new locations and other typical voting sites in Green Bay is that the satellite locations don’t have printed ballots. Instead, they use electronic ExpressVote touch-screen machines.
In-person absentee voting is available at St. Bernard Parish and Johnsonville Tailgate Village August 7-9 from 3 to 8 p.m.
In-person absentee voting kicked off at City Hall July 30. It will continue Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
