DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Department of Natural Resources calls it a chance to give the gift of the great outdoors.
Vehicle admission stickers for state parks and other properties are now on sale.
Signs of the season are easy to find at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek.
“We have a lot of hiking trails. We also have a lot of snow shoe trails, and ski trails, when the weather is right,” said Krista Lutzke, DNR Natural Resources Educator.
Lutzke said with 1.2 million visitors each year, the park is popular. She added that a daily sticker at Peninsula costs $10, but buying a $28 annual resident vehicle sticker is a good way to get into the more than 60 parks, forests and recreation areas across the state.
“You don’t have to wait until January to get them to enter any of our parks. It’s just an opportunity to start a little early. Get outdoors, and enjoy all of our natural resources.”
Peninsula State Park Superintendent Eric Hyde says admission stickers are available online, over the phone, or at state-owned properties. He says they make good holiday gifts, while generating money for the park system as well.
“All of the state park stickers, daily passes sold throughout the state, they don’t go to that individual property, but they stay within the park program to help fund our operations.”
Lutzke said admission stickers here can pay for themselves after a few visits.
“It’s like that social contract, where you say okay, I’ve got an annual pass. I need to get my money’s worth. As you start visiting all of our different opportunities, you’re going to realize that you want to visit way more than just those three times.”
Officials say over the course of a typical year, about 20 million people visit properties throughout the Wisconsin State Park System.
