TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Book lovers and nature enthusiasts can navigate new adventures with a special outdoor reading journey at two locations in Two Rivers.
The Lester Public Library and Zander Park are now home to StoryWalks, a movement and literacy boosting project that places illustrated children’s books, displayed page by page, along a walking route.
In early 2023, the library was the recipient of a $50,000 West Foundation’s Directors’ Choice Imagining Grant, given to “a non-profit agency that designs a program or service focused on the arts, culture, or environment in Manitowoc County.”
In its grant submission, the Lester Public Library detailed a project that would promote early literacy and environmental awareness, partnering with the City of Two Rivers Parks & Recreation Department and Woodland Dunes Nature Center & Preserve.
With these grant funds, StoryWalks were constructed along the library path and in Zander Park.
The money also went towards restoring a large portion of Zander Park and adding a raised boardwalk and natural play features.
“During the pandemic, a lot of places like parks and libraries were making temporary signs that they would put book pages out and then you could follow the trail and read a book,” explained Director of Parks and Recreation Mike Mathis. “So, what we did was install permanent metal ones so they’ll last essentially forever. The library will help us switch out the stories that go on the story board periodically throughout the year.”
On Wednesday, a celebration was held to commemorate the project with books, raffle prizes, adventure packs, and an accompanying brat fry.
