The United States Hockey League is conducting it’s annual draft this week. Tuesday was Phase 1 which has USHL teams pick “futures” players who are aged 17 and under. Madison had the number one overall choice and selected Sam Kappell of Appleton who played his high school hockey for the Green Bay Notre Dame Academy Tritons. Kappell, a high scoring forward, tallied a hat trick with two assists in Notre Dame’s 8-2 victory over Verona in the WIAA State Championship game in March. He’s the first area player to ever go number one in the Phase 1 draft.
The Green Bay Gamblers top pick was in round two, selecting forward Aiden Lane from Ontario, Canada.
The Phase 2 draft takes place Wednesday which allows teams to pick any player who wasn’t previously selected as a futures pick.
