DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Stunning views are on display at State Parks around Wisconsin, and people will be able to check them out for free this weekend.
Some parts of the park won’t be open though, due to COVID-19 concerns.
From the shoreline of the Sturgeon Bay shipping channel, to the limestone formations of the Niagara Escarpment nearby, Potawatomi State Park has something for just about everyone, and this weekend, The Department of Natural Resources is waiving the fees for fishing, riding the trails, or just visiting the state parks.
“This is a great way. It’s early in the season to encourage people to get out, and explore the outdoors. Hopefully people have the opportunity to participate in the activity free of charge,” said Erin Brown Stender, Potawatomi State Park Superintendent.
But not everything is available. Historically camping is not part of the free fun weekend, but COVID-19 concerns are keeping all sites closed at least through June 7, and maybe even longer.
The park office is closed to the public. Yellow tape surrounds the two playground areas, and the shelter near the shoreline is shuttered until further notice.
Brown Stender tells FOX some other areas are now available.
“We’re starting to open some restrooms in some day use areas, so visitors to state parks this weekend will see some more rest room facilities open.”
Sue Selvick and Patti Peterson hiked the Hemlock Trail on Wednesday. They tell FOX 11 the free fun weekend is a chance for anyone to experience the park.
“Yes, We will see a big difference. A lot of people will be coming,” said Sue Selvick, Sturgeon Bay.
“I think people are just ready to, I mean, it’s still social distancing, and doing all those things that are recommended, but it’s nice just to get into the park,” said Patti Peterson, Sturgeon Bay.
The free fun weekend runs June 6-7. After that, visitors will need to purchase an annual park pass, online, or over the phone.
Saturday is also National Trails Day. In celebration, the Brown County Parks and Rec Department is waiving daily fees and offering free usage of all Brown County Trails on Saturday and Sunday.
