CHICAGO, ILL (WTAQ-WNFL) – The Milwaukee Brewers got just 4 hits and struck out 12 times in losing to the Chicago Cubs 4-0 in the season opener at Wrigley Field in Chicago Thursday afternoon.
Willy Adames, William Contreras, Brian Anderson and Bryce Turang accounted for the Brewers’ hits. Contreras and Jesse Winker both struck out 3 times against a quartet of Chicago pitchers.
Corbin Burnes started and took the loss for Milwaukee. Burns pitched 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 3.
Burns was followed to the mound by relievers Peter Strzelecki, Gus Varland and Javy Guerra. Each threw 1 scoreless inning.
The Cubs scored all their runs in the third inning. Darby Swanson drove home Miles Mastrobuoni and Nico Horner with a single to right. Following an error by Adames that put Ian Happ on base, Trey Mancini singled to scored Swanson. Yan Gomes then reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Happ.
Marcus Stroman started on the mound for the Cubs. He pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8.
Keegan Thompson, Brad Boxberger and Michael Fulmer each followed with a scoreless inning of relief.
The teams have the day off Friday before resuming the series on Saturday.
