Cactus League play got underway for the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend and it began with a bang as the Brewers opened the spring schedule with a 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. Garrett Mitchell hit a pair of home runs and Rowdy Tellez picked up where he left off last season with a long ball.
On Sunday, Milwaukee split the squad and it was a rough day for the pitchers. In the 11-4 loss to the Oakland A’s, off-season acquisition Jason Junk gave up four hits and four runs while walking two without recording an out. Luis Urias went deep and a couple of youngsters had big knocks in the 9th, with Eric Brown Jr. hitting a two run blast and Carver Devanney adding a solo shot.
The Colorado Rockies beat the second Brewers squad 12-6. Milwaukee held early leads of 3-4 and 4-3 before the Rockies erupted for nine runs in the 7th and 8th inning off minor league arms.
The Brewers will travel for the first time Monday, taking on the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium. Adrian Houser will make his first appearance of the spring. Pre-game coverage begins at 1:55 PM with a 2:05 PM first pitch on 1440 AM and 101.9 FM WNFL.
