KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – As schools prepare to welcome back students, local health leaders push vaccination against COVID-19.
One Kewaunee County clini, is focusing in on vaccinating students and stff.
“Is open to all people but was designed for school staff, students and coaches just t try to help them out for the start of the school year,” said Cindy Kinnard.
Kinnard is a health officer for the county’s public health department.
She says it’s been a struggle to get people vaccinated in the rural area.
Comparing Kewaunee County to the rest of the state, Kinnard says the county is about 43% vaccinated, adding schools trail further behind that, at about 20-25% vaccinated, and public health officials aren’t only fighting age restrictions.
The hold-up: Not everyone’s ready to get a shot.
“We hear from a number of different perspectives from parents,” weighed in Glenn Schlender. “Some are adamantly opposed to vaccination and some are highly supportive.”
Schlender, is aware of pushes like these to get students and staff vaccinated, but the Luxemburg-Casco School district Administrator adds the district doesn’t take a stance.
“We believe that that’s a personal decision and we leave it up to that,” he explained. “But we do make sure they have the appropriate information so we make sure they remain current with regards to Covid.”
So as health leaders push for higher vaccination rates, and face the uphill battle against vaccine hesitancy–
The deadline to get shots in students’ and staff’s arms inches closer, with classes starting in just a few weeks.
