GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – City leaders in Green Bay hope to have a beach back at Bay Beach in the next two years.
The process is underway to get people back in the sand at Bay Beach. But Mayor Eric Genrich says they’re fighting with Mother Nature to actually get things done.
“We changed a little bit of the staging with that project in recent months because of some of the high water levels. Thankfully, that’s now receding,” Genrich told WTAQ News. “We decided to move forward with the pier and the boardwalk work, with the swimmable beach following on that work. So we’re gonna be able to start construction on the on the pier and the boardwalk in 2022 with the hopes of having that swimmable beach in 2023.”
The city is still looking to raise another $3.5 million to open Bay Beach to swimmers as the plans fall into place.
People have been banned from the water at Bay Beach since 1945 because of pollution, but the city says the water and beach are much cleaner now.
