MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — It’s severe weather awareness week and Wisconsin Emergency Management is encouraging you to have a plan in case severe weather strikes.
“Tornado and severe weather awareness week is an opportunity to encourage people to really go over, and practice, their plans for what to do when a tornado or other severe weather event is expected in their area,” said WEM spokesman Andrew Beckett.
Beckett says you should have a plan for both your home and your workplace.
“It’s important to really have an opportunity to exercise those plans,” said Beckett. “To make sure that you know where to go, so that you can stay safe with severe weather in the area.”
Also important is making sure you have what’s needed in case a severe weather event cuts you off from rescue, if such a thing would be necessary. Beckett encourages building a preparedness kit.
“Things like food, water, a flashlight, a first aid kit,” said Beckett.
To give people the chance to implement their severe weather plans, a statewide tornado drill will be held on Thursday. At 1:45 and 6:45 pm participating municipalities and media outlets will be sounding their alarms to encourage people to test their storm preparedness plans.
