Fife’s Furballs! Meet Mae!
Available for adoption at Mit Lieba German Shepherd Dog Rescue!
Mae is a unique, “dwarf” shepherd in a compact body. Mae is 57 lbs and insists on thinking she’s a lap dog. Her front legs splay out but that doesn’t stop her from going on 1/2 mile walks with a pep in her step; as well as doing a flight of stairs to sleep in foster mom’s bed at night. The stairs were conquered after just one week of being on pain medication as well as Dasuquin. She will need both for life.
We believe Mae to be approximately 10 years of age. She was clearly loved by someone; but her person was no longer able to care for her. She ended up at Animal Control where she waited and hoped her person would be back for her; but it wasn’t to be.
Mae had a rough start coming in to rescue. She was very distrustful, shut down, and giving growls and looking away. But once she knew her foster mom was ok, she was GOLDEN in Mae’s mind. This took barely 24 hours.
Mae is very loyal to her person – like, to the end of time. She bonds easily, once she is comfortable. It would be good for Mae to be exposed to family and friends of her future owner, to help her learn to trust people whom her person trusts.
If you are her person, you can hold her, hug her, kiss her (and get plenty of kisses back!) and handle her in all ways possible. She just needs to know you are ok, then she is mush in your hands
Mae has a lot of love to give to someone who would love a loyal companion. Just know that Mae will be distrustful of someone she doesn’t know…at first.
Mae is living with another GSD and they have bouts of playing that are pretty darn fun to watch. Both dogs are definitely alpha females; which I wouldn’t typically recommend but they are making it work. So another dog in the house would likely be fine for Mae.
It is evident that Mae had multiple litters of pups. I get the sense she has a nurturing side to her, so perhaps another furry friend would be a good thing for Mae’s psyche.
Mae has been briefly exposed to the resident cat. The cat is not sure about Mae, and vice versa. However, Mae spent a weekend with a temporary foster and ended up grooming their cat; so a cat in her new forever home is a definite possibility.
BTW – Mae is the most perfectly housetrained guest her foster mom has had in a long, LONG time. A big plus! Mae does NOT make messes in the house, and foster mom works full-time so that is a welcome perk. Typically Mae is crated when foster mom is away which she tolerates just fine. The one time Mae refused to go in her crate, and ended up spending the day loose in the house – MEH. No issues at all. So Mae could easily be with a household who works full-time – or a household where adults are home much of the time; she would love the companionship.
Mae has not been exposed to children in her foster home.
If you are a softy for seniors – and you don’t mind putting in a little extra time at first, to get Mae comfortable – she may be the perfect companion for you!
