GOODMAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Authorities have released the names of the man who allegedly shot another man, then was killed by officers.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation says the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home in Goodman around 5 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, the alleged shooter drove off. Inside the house, investigators found the body of Richard Gibbs, 62, of Milwaukee.
Meanwhile, deputies followed the suspect. DCI says he stopped his vehicle, got out and pointed a gun at the deputies. Deputies shot him and he died at the scene. He was identified as John Lipski, 62, of Milwaukee.
Investigators say Gibbs and Lipski knew each other.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
Per department policy, five officers have been placed on administrative assignment. They are:
- Lt. Barry Degnitz, 27 years in law enforcement
- Deputy Jesse Parker, 19 years in law enforcement
- Deputy Patrick Callahan, 4 years in law enforcement
- Deputy Dave Oginski, 15 years in law enforcement
- Deputy Steve Schmidt, 12 years in law enforcement
The sheriff’s office is investigating Gibbs’ death. DCI is investigating Lipski’s death.
