MENOMINEE, Mich. (WTAQ-WLUK) — After telling parents that fentanyl was discovered in an elementary school hallway Monday, the superintendent of Menominee Area Public Schools says investigators now believe the substance in question is an ADHD medication.
Superintendent Drew Buyarski said in a statement:
Yesterday, local police conducted a preliminary field test on a substance that yielded a positive result for fentanyl.
However, upon further investigation, we believe the substance in question is actually ADHD medication. At this time, it is entirely unknown why the initial field test returned a positive result for fentanyl.
We want to emphasize that no arrests have been made in connection with this incident. The investigation remains ongoing to determine the exact nature of the substance and the cause of the testing discrepancy.
Buyarski’s statement did not name the ADHD medication.
In an automated recording to parents on Monday, Buyarski said fentanyl was found in the upstairs hallway of the elementary school and it hasn’t been determined where it came from.
“The area was immediately secured and we took swift, appropriate steps to address the situation and prioritize the safety of our students and staff,” the automated message from Buyarski stated.
Another automated message from the district encouraged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of unverified substances.
“Please be assured that our building will have an increased security presence and our staff remains on high alert,” the message states. “Your children are safe and they absolutely should come to school tomorrow.”
Several parents are skeptical about the district’s response to the situation.
