(UW ATHLETICS) MADISON – The No. 20 Wisconsin men’s soccer team (7-2-3, 1-2-3 B1G) notched its first Big Ten victory of the season on Saturday night. Aidan Martinez’s first-half goal proved to be the game-winner in Wisconsin’s 1-0 win over Rutgers (5-6-1, 3-3-0 B1G). Over 1,100 fans cheered the Badgers on to victory at McClimon Soccer Complex.
How it Happened:
Rutgers challenged Wisconsin’s defense early, but Judewellin Michel stood tall between the posts, making the game’s first save in the 11th minute. Roman Eisa nearly collected his third goal of the week, however the Scarlet Knight’s Rafael Ponce De Leon punched the ball to safety.
Six minutes later, Badger forward Aidan Martinez tapped in a loose ball in front of the net to put Wisconsin ahead. Eisa and Markie Hrvojevic notched assists on the score.
Wisconsin continued to bring pressure, with Martinez putting another shot on target in the 34th minute, but only led by one heading into the break.
The Badgers’ defense remained impenetrable in the second half, and Michel’s second save of the night was enough to secure the shutout victory.
Key Notes:
- Michel secured his fifth shutout, and Wisconsin’s sixth shutout of the season.
