(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University cross country team completed their first home meet in nearly four decades on Friday, Sept. 25, hosting the first-annual Jim Allen Classic at Veterans Park. The Golden Eagles claimed first-place in both races for a clean sweep of the meet.
“First place on both sides was a big deal for the program. We are growing and heading in the right direction. I talked to the team about how we aren’t just running for this year and this team, that we are part of something much bigger and this was a big deal at our first home meet in 40 plus years. Plus it was parents weekend so the support was incredible! This was a huge moment for the program and I’m just proud to get to work with this group and see the growth they are bringing for us all. I hope this continues for a long time! The venue was amazing, it’s a spectacular view down at the lakefront and the course was lined with people throughout. It was a fun atmosphere and I loved how much the track team and the administration came out and supported as well” Associate Head Cross Country coach Jack Hackett said of the meet.
The Marquette men kicked off the race with the Keith Hanson Men’s 7k, with MU finishing first as a team with 28 points. MU finished just ahead of Green Bay, which finished second with 32 points. The Golden Eagles placed five runners inside the top nine and seven among the top 15.
“We had a screw up in the men’s race that led to them skipping a loop of the course and only running 7km, but I thought we competed really well, as evidenced by us beating some good teams. The top three ran equivalents of big PR’s and we are set up for a great race next week at Notre Dame” Hackett said.
Sophomore Dylan Riniker led Marquette with a third-place finish in 21:32.5, while seniors Logan Goodman and Nick Parrell followed in fourth and fifth with times of 21:47.3 and 21:54.4, respectively. Junior Edgar Valles placed seventh in 22:19.9, and graduate student Will Allen rounded out MU’s scoring five in ninth at 22:24.2.
Sophomore Patrick Clune was the sixth Golden Eagle across the line, placing 13th in 22:29.3, while freshman Nick Ahlheim completed Marquette’s top seven with a 15th-place finish in 22:30.7.
Junior Sadie Kibelstis claimed the individual title to lead Marquette to a first-place team finish in the Amy Erickson Gallagher Women’s 6k with 25 points, 15 points ahead of runner-up Green Bay. Kibelstis crossed the line in 22:41.7 to earn the victory, while the Golden Eagles placed four runners inside the top seven and all five scorers among the top 11.
“The women’s team I had hoped could win the race, but I was blown away by how they stepped up. Sadie Kibelstis in particular, winning her first race ever. She’s worked so incredibly hard and to get to do it in front of her family from Seattle was amazing. Taya and Izzy battled to the end as well both with big races. Elise and Kaylie both stepped up big and that was the difference between last race out and this one. The whole team really competed well and I was especially proud of two of our hometown runners in Paige Haglund and Vanessa Henderson who have been battling some health issues but both had great days today and inspired everyone around the team” Hackett said.
Sophomore Taya Gummerson finished third in 22:55.7, while freshman Isabelle Wiebe followed closely behind in fourth at 22:56.1. Sophomore Elise Fischer placed seventh in 23:06.8, and sophomore Kaylie Earl rounded out Marquette’s scoring five in 11th with a time of 23:26.1.
Sophomore Paige Haglund and senior Alexa Overstreet completed the Golden Eagles’ top seven, finishing 14th and 15th in 23:37.5 and 23:38.5, respectively.
Phoenix men, women take second
Men’s Recap – Noah Jahnke won his second race of the season with a 7k time of 21:26.9. Mason Gates finished only five seconds behind with a time of 21:32.5. The top five runners for the Phoenix all finished in the top 12, with Ethan Onesti placing sixth, Carter Scholey placing 11th, and Cameron Weiland finishing 12th. The race was scheduled for an 8k, but there was a wrong turn, turning the race into a 7k race. The Marquette men won the meet with 28 points. Green Bay had 32, followed by Milwaukee with 73 and Chicago State with 116.
Women’s Recap – Madison Lotten had her best finishing position on Friday as runner-up with a 6k time of 22:52.1. Only 14 seconds behind her was Lyla Vlcek, placing sixth. The Phoenix had their top five runners all finish in the top 13, with Lia Peterson in ninth, Norah Froslee in 12th, and Julia Thompson in 13th. The Green Bay women placed second in the meet with a score of 40, ahead of Milwaukee 63 and Chicago State with 120. Marquette won the meet with a score of 25.
