Australian researchers have unveiled a groundbreaking approach to disaster response, developing “paraborgs;” cyborg cockroaches capable of navigating hazardous, tight spaces to deliver lifesaving medication to trapped victims.
Scientists from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales fitted North Queensland giant burrowing cockroaches, the world’s heaviest cockroach species, with high-tech backpacks containing cameras and miniature syringe cylinders. Using implanted electrodes that stimulate the insect’s nervous system, operators can steer the resilient creatures through dense rubble where traditional robots cannot travel.
During laboratory testing with a camera-equipped “observer” cockroach and a drug-carrying counterpart, the team achieved a 100% success rate in reaching target checkpoints, with drug-delivery success reaching up to 95% when launched within 15 centimeters of a target. Researchers hope these cyborg swarms will one day stabilize victims of earthquakes, building collapses, or remote medical emergencies before search-and-rescue teams can physically reach them.
